Goal

The goal of the course is to prepare students to make both immediate and lifelong use of information in an efficient and effective way.

Objectives

This course focuses on the concepts and logic of information access, and fosters information independence and critical thinking. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to make the decisions and choices necessary to efficiently do literature searches for future term papers, reports, and theses. This will include proficiency in:

  • Locating various service areas, facilities, and resources available in the Library
  • Retrieving and evaluating information on the Internet
  • Identifying and using the appropriate databases to obtain references to periodical articles
  • Using MountainLynx, the WVU Online Catalog to obtain information about books
  • Properly citing the information sources to avoid plagiarism
