MountainLynx

Description:

  • MountainLynx is the WVU Libraries' Online Catalog. Use it to find out what books, periodicals, microforms, and audiovisual materials the WVU Libraries own. It contains holdings for all the WVU Libraries including libraries on the Downtown Campus, Evansdale Library, Law Library, Health Sciences Library, and Charleston Division Library.

Access:

  • Simply use your web browser on your computer to connect to http://mountainlynx.lib.wvu.edu Or, from the Library's home page select MOUNTAINLYNX CATALOG.

General Search Techniques:

  • If you need to search the Online Catalog by author, title, journal title, subject heading, call number, or keyword, all of these options are listed under BASIC SEARCH. Simply type in your search terms and select the type of search you want. You may find it helpful to read the search tips on the screen to avoid some pitfalls.
  • For more complicated searches involving multiple keywords, author, subject, etc. we highly recommend ASSISTED SEARCH, which pops up a search form for you to fill out. Click the "down arrows" beside each box to indicate specific fields (e.g. author, title, etc.) to refine your search.
  • QUICK LIMITS or SET LIMITS or LIMIT RESULTS are some of the neat features of MountainLynx. Use one of these before or after your search to restrict the search by library location (Evansdale, Health Sciences…), type of materials (book, videorecording…), language, publication date, etc. It is important to read the on-screen instructions on how each of the limiting functions works.
  • Ever lost track of how many books you have checked out? Want to renew a book when the due date is approaching? Want to put a hold on a book that is currently checked out? You can do all of these and more on your own by clicking the Request or Patron button. Simply enter your WVU ID number and your last name to access your personal information and borrowing records.

Special Search Tips:

  • When doing ADVANCED SEARCH, be sure to use Boolean logic operators (and, or, not) to combine your keywords. And remember to use quotes for phrase and parenthesis to group synonyms.
For example: "affirmative action" and (colleges or universities)
  • When searching by keyword, you can type in the beginning of a word, then a question mark, and it will search for any words beginning with the letters you typed. For example, a search for keyword COMPUT? will retrieve items containing the words COMPUTE, COMPUTER, COMPUTERS, COMPUTING, etc.
  • One of the most frequently asked reference questions at the reference desk is: "How can I find out if you have periodical X, or issue Y of periodical X?" Simply choose "journal title" search under BASIC SEARCH. You must look up periodicals by their full titles (not abbreviations). Once you have found the periodical in MountainLynx, it is very important for you to view the complete display of what issues we have and where they are located.
