Open Access Week @ WVU

October 19-23, 2009 will mark the first international Open Access Week.

Open Access Week is an opportunity to broaden awareness and understanding of 0pen Access to research, including access policies from all types of research funders, within the international higher education community and the general public. The now-annual event has been expanded from a single day to accommodate widespread global interest in the movement toward open, public access to scholarly research results.

FRPAA, Act Now! www.taxpayeraccess.org/frpaa

The advantages of open access are many and include increased access to research materials for students, increased citation impact factors for faculty publications, greater visibility for the institution, department and research specialization, lower subscription costs for University Libraries, better planning and promotion measures for administrators, new business models for publishers and access for the general public to the latest research findings, particularly important for consumer and patient advocacy. We all win with Open Access.

Open Access Week promotions at West Virginia University coincide with the annual “Diversity Week” celebrations on campus. In many ways Open Access is the ultimate form of social justice—bringing scholars and people from around the world together for the common good. Open Access to WVU research will help “Let it Shine”. Open access scholarly communications are part of a growing trend of technological development and resource sharing that is transforming economies by providing access to research results to the world while bringing reciprocal investment back to the local level. Learn more about how you can become involved with open access efforts today.

Additionally, the WVU Libraries have helped the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) to organize an international open access video contest on YouTube. Visit the NDLTD YouTube Contest webpage to view the videos and participate in voting.
