Laptop Computers: Information and Guidelines
| Introduction | Responsibility | Batteries | Printing and Saving | Help |
-
Twenty wireless laptop computers--15 Dell Latitudes and 5 Apple MacBooks--as well as other digital devices are available at the Service Desk to be checked out for 4 hour, in-library use.
-
You will need a West Virginia University Mountaineer ID card, a valid driver's license, or other photo ID to check out a laptop.
-
Due to the limited number of computers, one renewal is permitted, if no one is waiting to use a computer.
-
All computers and other digital devices must be returned to the Service Desk before the library closes.
-
Computers, power adapters, and other devices turned in late will result in overdue fines of $0.05 per minute per item.
-
Laptop users should be aware of signage at the Service Desk displaying Registration and Fiscal Liability information in which they acknowledge responsibility for a computer and any peripherals checked out to them.
-
Never leave the computer unattended while it is checked out to you!
-
Portable computers are for use only within the Evansdale Library. You should be able to access MountainLynx and the Internet from anywhere in the library, via the wireless WVU.Encrypted network.
-
If a computer and/or AC adapter and/or any other digital device is not returned, that will be considered a theft of university and state property, and appropriate action will be taken.
-
All Evansdale Library computers are protected with antivirus software. However, the Evansdale Library is not responsible for any computer virus or other malware that may be transferred to, or from, a user's storage media.
-
Although the laptops have extended batteries, we recommend using the AC adapter to plug into any electrical outlet.
-
You can print your work to the two Pharos print touchscreen stations and three laser printers located on the first floor. The cost is $.06 per black and white page and $.25 per color page, and will require swiping your Mountaineer ID card which functions as a debit card. A value-add machine is located near the Service Desk to add debit value to your card for either printing or photocopying.
-
You should save your files often to a portable storage media such as a flash drive, upload to an online server such as Dropbox, or email to yourself. Files left on the laptops are deleted when the device is restarted.
-
For additional help, ask a staff member at the Service Desk. Staff can troubleshoot some common hardware problems and answer general questions about how to use the computer.
-
Questions on specific software packages may be referred to the consultants at the Library Systems Department. Please report any computer malfunctions when you turn in the computer at the Service Desk.
