Music Library Moves to Evansdale Library

WVU's Music Library recently joined the symphony of collections at Evansdale Library.

The collection, located in the Creative Arts Center since 1968, now occupies a large portion of the lower floor at Evansdale Library. The move unites the music library with other libraries for the creative arts and means increased services to users.

"We hope students and faculty will appreciate the improvements," creative arts librarian Beth Royall said. "The library will be open more hours. They will have access to a reference librarian and to other resources."

Evansdale already served as home for the theater, art, and dance library collections. The music library followed suit out of necessity at the close of the spring semester.

Space became a concern for the College of Creative Arts as the music library began to grow beyond its confines on the top floor of the Creative Arts Center. Originally, room 424-A housed the entire music library: books, scores, periodicals, sound recordings and listening facilities.

As the collection grew, the library expanded to a room on second floor. A newly constructed book depository provided some relief by taking in older, lesser-used material.

At the same time, the College of Creative Arts has expanded its programs and experienced an increase in the number of students majoring in the arts.

Beth Royall, creative arts librarian, and John Core, library associate, assist students and faculty in the Music Library's new home.

The possibility of moving into Evansdale Library was music to the ears of College of Creative Arts Dean Bernie Schultz. Along with gaining space at the CAC - which has already been reassigned for small ensemble rehearsals and theater movement classes - Schultz appreciates the benefits of the new location.

"It's a combination of having all the various aspects of the fine arts libraries together in one location and having a very excellent person, Beth Royall, to help guide research in those areas," Schultz said. "It will be much more student friendly."

He also praised Royall, Evansdale Director Mary Strife and Libraries Dean Frances O'Brien, calling the move an example of cooperation across traditional boundaries for the betterment of student and faculty research.

"I think it's exemplary of where the University is going and where education needs to go," Schultz said.
