West Virginia University (WVU) invites application and nominations for the position of Dean of Libraries. As the chief academic and administrative officer of the WVU Libraries, the Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and oversees 38 library faculty members, 70 staff members, two depository facilities, and three (including Health Sciences) libraries with a combined area of over 300,000 square feet.
West Virginia University was founded in 1867 as a land-grant university: the federal government gave the state of West Virginia land to establish a public university that would provide a broad segment of the population a practical education that had direct relevance to their daily lives. Over 100 years later, WVU remains true to that central land-grant mission. Today WVU also serves a unique role as the state’s only doctoral degree-granting research university with comprehensive health science programs. Only eleven higher education institutions nationally are land-grant research universities with comprehensive health sciences. WVU offers 184 majors in 14 separate schools and colleges. The Morgantown campus is spread over a thousand acres. Research expenditures in fiscal year 2012 were $163,500,000. Fall 2012 statewide enrollment was 32,595 students.

West Virginia University is strongly committed to the success of its Libraries and recognizes their essential role in fulfilling its research and educational missions. In the last decade, WVU invested $37 million to build the new Downtown Campus Library, including the renovation of the historic Wise Library, 6.2 million to build two depositories on campus, and $17 million to construct a new library for the Health Sciences. In 2009, an $800,000 renovation of the Evansdale Library was completed. Currently, renovations are underway to transform the Evansdale Library into an innovative academic learning environment that will include the addition of a restaurant, group study areas, and substantial flexible space that will be used to develop collaborative endeavors with other units on campus, such as the Office of Information Technology.
The new and renovated facilities have proven to be ideal spaces for the Libraries and a diverse array of academic services. The Libraries provide access to more than two million books, 246 databases, over 48,000 journals, and numerous digital collections. In addition, the Libraries house an Appalachian Collection, as well as an outstanding West Virginia and Regional History Center that includes a noteworthy Rare Book Room. It also serves as a Federal Regional Depository Library and a Patent and Trademark Depository. The Libraries have strong reference and research services, and a substantial instruction and information literacy program. They are engaged in numerous digitization projects, and have also been involved in several initiatives to support new forms of scholarly publishing and communication. Reporting to the WVU Provost, the Dean of Libraries provides administrative leadership and responsibility for all library operations and is responsible for positioning the library to enhance the university within the vision of the university strategic plan. Accordingly, the successful candidate with provide strategic planning and policy direction in the areas of collection development, public and technical services, facilities planning and personnel policy, and is responsible for the operation of multiple libraries on campus.
The Dean will work collaboratively to fulfill the university’s educational and research mission through the provision of both traditional and innovative library resources and services. The Dean is responsible for the Libraries’ fiscal resources and actively participates in development and grant activities. The Dean represents the Libraries within the university and at the local, state and national level.
