The WVU Libraries are offering a new online course this fall called ULIB493: Film and Media Literacy. ULIB is a new designation for library courses. This is a fun and easy three credit course that students in many majors will enjoy. For example, students in Journalism, Communications, History, Theater, Art, English, Education, Liberal Arts, Multidisciplinary Studies, Sociology, and anyone who likes movies will increase their knowledge of film and film criticism by participating in this class. This course is taught online and students will watch films online and on Reserve in the Media Services Department of the Downtown Library, so they can do the work for the course at any time during the week.

Students will learn about media literacy and become informed film consumers in this course. They will learn film vocabulary and criticism, and how to use two online databases to find comprehensive film information. Students will study four film genres, Gangster films, Blaxploitation films, Westerns, and Slasher films. The final project is a film review of a movie they select from their genre of choice. To learn more about the course, visit the web page at: http://www.libraries.wvu.edu/instruction/film/.

The West Virginia Day celebration June 20 at the Downtown Campus Library drew in people from around campus and the Morgantown area. More than 100 people stood in line for a piece of cake and a poster commemorating the 143rd anniversary of the Mountain State’s founding.

The West Virginia and Regional History Collection designs a poster to mark each birthday for the state. The 2006 edition of the West Virginia Day poster features items from the West Virginia and Regional History Collection: a WVU cadet cap, a letter from a Civil War soldier and a drawing by David Hunter Strother.

Posters are still available at the WVRHC on the sixth floor of Wise Library.

Campus Buzz

West Virginia’s 143rd birthday on Tuesday will be celebrated throughout the Mountain State, with WVU’s downtown library hosting several commemorative activities open to the public.

Beginning at noon Tuesday, the activities will kick off at Eliza’s coffee shop on the fourth floor of the downtown library. A birthday cake and the return of the library’s renowned West Virginia Day poster will be included in the celebration, as well as a launch of a new digital resource that will benefit both students and residents.

Dedicated to highlighting the library’s expansion of digital resources that pertain to West Virginia history, the commemoration will introduce a new inclusive Guide to Archives and Manuscripts in the library’s West Virginia and Regional History Collection.

Designed to bring catalog records for all archival collections in the West Virginia Collection together in a single finding aid for the first time in several decades, the guide will make its debut online Tuesday at www.libraries.wvu.edu/wvcollection/, and in a special booth in Eliza’s.

This year, the West Virginia Day poster will showcase a WVU cadet cap, a letter from a Civil War solider and a drawing by David Hunter Strother, all items from the West Virginia and Regional History Collection.

As a library tradition, the number of free posters will correspond with the state’s birthday. After the first 143 posters are given out, more will be available for $10.00 each.

Don’t worry about bringing a card or wearing a party hat. Come celebrate West Virginia’s birthday at Eliza’s in the Downtown Campus Library.

On Tuesday, June 20, the WVU Libraries will be celebrating the 143rd anniversary of the founding of the Mountain State with birthday cake, the return of the Libraries’ celebrated West Virginia Day poster and the launch of a new digital resource that is a true birthday gift to West Virginians everywhere.

This year’s celebration is dedicated to highlighting the Libraries’ growing digital resources in the field of West Virginia history. Included among those is the highly popular West Virginia OnView which currently offers online access to some 12,000 historical photographs. A new comprehensive Guide to Archives and Manuscripts in the West Virginia and Regional History Collection will make its debut online and at a special booth in Eliza’s on Tuesday. The new Guide will bring catalog records for all archival collections in the West Virginia Collection together in a single finding aid for the first time in several decades. The new resource should be welcome news for many as the Collection’s existing guide has been the most popular hit on the WVU Libraries website since its founding.

The cutting of the cake and distribution of the 2006 edition of the West Virginia Day poster will occur at noon. Traditionally, the WVRHC ties the number of posters available to the state’s birthday. This year that means the first 143 people in line will be presented with a numbered poster.
